PETA To Launch Porn Site To Protect Animal Rights?

How ironic is this article?

NEW YORK - An animal rights group, which is no stranger to attention-grabbing campaigns featuring nude women, plans to launch a pornography website to raise awareness about veganism.

The nonprofit organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), whose controversial campaigns draw criticism from women's rights groups, said it hopes to publicize veganism through a mix of pornography and graphic footage of animal suffering.

"We're hoping to reach a whole new audience of people, some of whom will be shocked by graphic images that maybe they didn't anticipate seeing when they went to the PETA triple-X site," said Lindsay Rajt, PETA's associate director of campaigns.

PETA has been accused of campaigning for animal rights at the cost of exploiting women. A Facebook group, Real Women Against PETA, was launched after the organization paid for a billboard showing an obese woman with the message: "Save the Whales. Lose the Blubber. Go Vegetarian."

Another critical Facebook group is called, "Vegans (and Vegetarians) Against PETA."

"PETA is extremely disingenuous," said Jennifer Pozner, executive director of the New York-based advocacy group Women In Media & News. "They have consistently used active sexism as their marketing strategy to garner attention. Their use of sexism has gotten more extreme and more degrading.

"This may be in their minds the only thing left at their disposal to lower the bar," she said.

PETA has filed paperwork to launch its pornography site when the controversial new .xxx domain becomes active in early December. While many nonprofits and corporations are scrambling to protect their website names from being hijacked by a pornographer slapping on a .xxx domain, PETA is embracing the new domain as just another way to conduct business.

"We try to use every outlet that we can to speak up for animals," Rajt said. "We anticipated that this new triple-X domain name would be a hot topic and we immediately decided to use it and take advantage of it to try to promote the animal rights message."

Jill Dolan, director of the program in gender and sexuality studies at Princeton University, was critical of the PETA campaigns.

"Exploiting porn to get people's juices going seems lame; exploiting pornographic images only of women to make their point is retrograde and misogynist," Dolan said in an email. "Come on, PETA. Don't be Neanderthals."

Rajt denied that PETA has been insensitive to women.

"Our demonstrators, the models, all chose to participate in our campaigns ... It's not a very feminist thing to do to turn to women and tell them whether or not they can use their voices, their bodies to express their voice."

Visitors to the X-rated site will initially be presented with pornographic content as well as images from PETA's salacious ads and campaigns, Rajt said. Those images will be followed by pictures and video shot undercover of the mistreatment of animals. The site will also include links to vegetarian and vegan -- using no animal products -- starter kits as well as recipes.

PETA's ad campaigns have featured adult film stars Sasha Grey, Ron Jeremy and Jenna Jameson. In 2008, the organization's YouTube account was temporarily shut down after showing racy videos of celebrities and others posing nude.

"When people first visit the site, it will be very enticing and once they go just a little bit deeper, that's when they'll be confronted with images that we hope will make them stop and think and get them talking and hopefully encourage them to make a lifestyle change to a plant-based diet," Rajt said. - Reuters

REM breaks up after 31 years

The alternative rock band, R.E.M., has officially split up after 31 years together, having produced 15 albums.  The decision turned out to be correct as the band continued to make hits for another 14 years. During their entire career of thirty-one years, R.E.M. produced 15 albums, among which Murmur, Reckoning, Document, Out of Time, New Adventures in Hi-Fi, Up and Automatic For the People which were very well sold worldwide. The last album they produced, Collapse Into Now, was released in March 2011, but a Greatest Hits album is expected to be launched this November with the help of Warner Brothers.Despite their numerous declarations stating that the break up was unanimously decided by the band’s members, Ethan Kaplan, owner of the R.E.M. fan community Murmurs, has reasons to believe that the new label politics adopted by Warner Brothers in September 2010 influenced their final decision. In a Rolling Stone interview he stated that the new requirements that bands must fulfill in order to get their records released might have been too demanding for the R.E.M. members to accept. “The thought of going back to 'paying dues' with new label staff, in a very weird industry, was too much," he concluded.

Whether the break-up was something they decided on their own, or was the result of a series of constraining factors, one thing is for sure, R.E.M. will continue to exist through their music. Guitarist Peter Buck leaves a trail of hope behind by letting fans know that R.E.M members will gladly continue to meet their supporters in music stores or clubs.

Each member also gave their own personal response to the split.

Mike Mills wrote, ”During our last tour, and while making Collapse Into Now and putting together this greatest hits retrospective, we started asking ourselves ‘what next?’ Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of working together. We have always been a band in the truest sense of the word – brothers who truly love, and respect each other. We feel kind of like pioneers in this – there’s no disharmony here, no fall outs, no lawyers squaring off. We’ve made this decision together, amicably, and with each other’s best interest at heart. The time just feels right.

Peter Buck said, “One of the things that has always been so great about being in R.E.M. was the fact that the records and the songs we wrote meant as much to the fans as they do to us. It was, and is, still important to us to do right by you. Being part of your lives was an unbelievable gift. Thank you. Mike, Michael Bill, and Bertis and I walk away as friends. I know I will be seeing them in the future, just as I know I will be seeing everyone who has followed us and supported us through the years. Even if it’s only the vinyl aisle of your local record store, or standing at the back of a club; watching a group of 19 year olds trying to change the world.”

Michael Stipe wrote, “A wise man once said – the skill in attending a party is knowing when it’s time to leave. We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we’re going to walk away from it. I hope our fans know this wasn’t an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way.”

For Sale: Yahoo!

Rumors have been spinning around tech circles that Yahoo is looking for a new owner. Despite having denied that the company was for sale in the immediate, expletive-laced aftermath of Carol Bartz's departure as CEO, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang admitted that the board is talking to potential buyers in a company-wide memo. Yang writes:

"Our advisers are working with us to develop ideas that we will pursue proactively. At the same time, they are fielding inquiries from multiple parties that have already expressed interest in a number of potential options. We will take the time we need to select and structure the best approach for the company, its shareholders and employees."

While the phrase "expressed interest in potential options" is not the same as "expressed interest in buying," one would expect Yang to address the rumors more directly, if indeed they're pure nonsense.

How To Try Out The New Facebook Timeline

Follow these steps to get a sneak peek (at your own risk!)

How to try out the new Facebook Timeline feature right now If you've heard the buzz about Facebook's upcoming profile page revolution, you're probably eager to take the new features for a test drive — and you can. If you need to get up to speed, Facebook is killing off profile pages as we know them in favor of Timelines, pages that collect the status updates, events, and photos that you (and Facebook's algorithm) deem worthy of your newfangled profile. Like many Facebook users, you may not welcome the update with open arms, but like they say, don't knock it 'til you've tried it. While the new Timeline feature won't begin officially rolling out to users until next week, you can cheat and get a sneak preview now by following these steps.

Warning: This process is an unofficial loophole in Facebook's system. It is intended for Facebook developers only, so once you activate the Timeline you may encounter some bumps along the way — after all, this is an unreleased feature. Follow these steps at your own risk — but if you do, have fun tooling around with your Timeline!

Go to your Facebook page and use the search box at the top to find the official Facebook Developer app. Typing in "developer" should bring it up as the top choice. After you select the app, grant it permission to access your basic information by clicking "allow."

2. Now that you've got the Facebook Developer app installed, you'll be brought to a welcome screen. Click the "Create New App" box in the upper right-hand corner. A pop-up box will appear titled "New App." In this box, you need to input an App Display Name and an App Namespace. This sounds confusing, but it doesn't matter what you enter here.

Just pick a few words and plug them in. Note that they must be unique (be creative) and the App Namespace doesn't allow spaces between words. Then you need to check that you you agree to the Platform Privacy Policy (read over it first).

Note: To complete this step, you must have a verified Facebook profile, so if you get an error message, you can follow Facebook's instructions for verifying your profile, which entails connecting it to a phone number or credit card, if you're comfortable with that.

3. You should then be returned to the developer portal's homepage. Look in the left-hand column and click a link named "Open Graph" to access the page titled "Get started using Open Graph." It should be above Roles, Credits, and Insights. Now you'll be prompted to create an action for your app. This sounds complicated, but it doesn't really matter what you type here because you aren't making a real app anyhow. Just choose an action and a noun, like "read" and "magazine." Enter your words of choice and click the "Get Started" button.

4. After you click through the first "Get Started" button, you'll be presented with a series of pages in sequence. Scroll to the bottom of each (we counted three) and click "Save Changes and Next." Don't worry about the content of these pages; it isn't relevant for your Timeline test drive.

Once you've clicked through and saved on each page, you should be returned to the dashboard where you began (you can tell because the app name you typed in earlier should be at the top). Now you're almost done!

Just wait a couple of minutes and then return to your normal Facebook homepage. Facebook should now recognize that you've registered a developer account, and you'll be prompted to try out the Timeline at the top of the page.

5. Keep in mind that this is a developer preview, so again, things might be buggy. If your profile behaves oddly after the installation, that's why.

Also, be warned: It doesn't appear to be possible to roll back to the original profile pages after you've enabled the Timeline. If you have any concerns or doubts about this process, you'll probably want to wait until the official release begins next week. If not, click "Start Tour" at the top of your Timeline and start exploring!

If you aren't into Facebook off-roading, flip through our Timeline photo gallery to get a safer sneak peek, or opt in to be first in line by clicking the "Sign Me Up" button on Facebook's official site!
